TECHNIQUE NO. 1 PALIMPSEST CREATING A RICHLY LAYERED SURFACE BY MAKING SHAPES AND THEN WIPING THEM PARTLY AWAY The word palimpsest generally refers to historical surfaces that were scraped or erased and then written upon again, with some traces of the older marks remaining. Similarly, this technique involves building surfaces by pouring paint onto a support, allowing the paint to partially dry, wiping off the remaining wet portion, and then repeating the process to accumulate overlapping layers of partially erased shapes.

STEP 8: Tape the skin to a standard sheet of printing paper along the top and left-hand sides of the skin. STEP 9: Feed the sheet into the printer. Print the image. STEP 10: Remove the tape. TECHNIQUE NO. 17 PATTERNED FABRIC GETTING A HEAD START USING EXISTING PATTERNS There is no rule that says a painting must begin with a blank canvas. Patterned fabrics can offer a great starting point, especially those with relatively sparse patterns. Look for lightweight cotton prints, which adhere well to supports and are easy to handle.

STEP 9: Allow the color to partially dry and then wipe off the remaining wet paint. STEP 10: Make a new color mixture and dilute it 1:1 with fluid acrylic medium. Using a color that is analogous to the background color will create subtle tonal shifts. Cover the entire surface this time. STEP 11: Watch the surface carefully. Notice how the paint forms puddles on its own in some areas and starts to dry where it is thinner. STEP 12: When this layer is partially dry, wipe the entire surface. TECHNIQUE NO.
